Support is via a free Oracle Discussion Forum only. Physical and logical structures[ edit ] An Oracle database system—identified by an alphanumeric system identifier or SID [74] —comprises at least one instance of the application, along with data storage. An instance—identified persistently by an instantiation number or activation id: SYS. Oracle documentation can refer to an active database instance as a "shared memory realm". In addition to storage, the database consists of online redo logs or logs , which hold transactional history.

Processes can in turn archive the online redo logs into archive logs offline redo logs , which provide the basis for data recovery and for the physical-standby forms of data replication using Oracle Data Guard. In version 10g, grid computing introduced shared resources where an instance can use CPU resources from another node in the grid. Information is shared between nodes through the interconnect—the virtual private network.

Storage[ edit ] The Oracle RDBMS stores data logically in the form of tablespaces and physically in the form of data files " datafiles ". Segments in turn comprise one or more extents.

Extents comprise groups of contiguous data blocks. Data blocks form the basic units of data storage. A DBA can impose maximum quotas on storage per user within each tablespace.

Specific partitions can then be added or dropped to help manage large data sets. Monitoring[ edit ] Oracle database management tracks its computer data storage with the help of information stored in the SYSTEM tablespace. A data dictionary consists of a special collection of tables that contains information about all user- objects in the database. Since version 8i, the Oracle RDBMS also supports "locally managed" tablespaces that store space management information in bitmaps in their own headers rather than in the SYSTEM tablespace as happens with the default "dictionary-managed" tablespaces.

DBAs can manage these files manually or leave their administration to Oracle itself. Note that a datafile has to belong to exactly one tablespace, whereas a tablespace can consist of multiple datafiles.

Redo log files, recording all changes to the database — used to recover from an instance failure. Often, a database stores these files multiple times for extra security in case of disk failure. Identical redo log files are associated in a "group". Read reviews that mention oracle sql database example expensive syntax. Top Reviews Most recent Top Reviews.

I found this book is better organized to check syntax on various functions. My DBA is usually checking the book for her job and she has found the book to be helpful for her needs. Overall I would recommend the book as a group reference.

Useful as a reference, not really good for learning. Example code would be helpful as compared to the syntax models provided. But it is very thorough and complete. However, I often just use Google since it is quicker. One person found this helpful. Now what should i have to do as i have no need of this book?? The examples are very simple to follow with step by step explanation.

I am not an oracle guru, but this books makes look like one. It arrived well packaged and in time, thanks guys. This is a very targeted, focused book and it is also a great resource for the individual that occasionally finds himself working on a ORACLE environment.

The techniques and tools are there, but it is not for the faint of heart!

A very useful reference,. The book covers everything that I'm interested in. See all 16 reviews. What other items do customers download after viewing this item?
